CEMAR undertakes research, planning, and stakeholder facilitation projects with the intent of balancing conservation and restoration with other beneficial uses such as water supply and flood protection. We work across the public sector with individual jurisdictions, interest-based coalitions, and State and Federal agencies to establish scientifically-sound management directions. Current projects include ... - Restoration of Steelhead to Alameda Creek. Since 1999 CEMAR has facilitated the Alameda Creek Fisheries Restoration Work Group, a multi-stakeholder watershed council planning steelhead restoration in the largest watershed that drains directly to San Francisco Bay. This effort has led to the removal of one small dam, and over $2 million in State funding has been obtained to remove three other dams and install fish screens on the largest water diversion in the watershed. A web camera is being used to detect in-migrating steelhead at an impassable barrier in the lower watershed, where adult fish are captured under permit for transport to a location where they can access spawning habitat. - Southern Steelhead Resources Project (SSRP). The SSRP will compile, digitally archive, and analyze available data on the anadromous fishes from San Mateo County to the Mexican Border. A key product of this effort will be digital media containing historical scientific information on steelhead and their habitat in the southern California coast that will be made available to all interested parties. Past successes (see our publications page) include ... - San Francisco Bay Area Steelhead Trout. CEMAR prepared the most authoritative analysis ever of the historical and current distributions of steelhead trout in streams of the San Francisco Estuary. The text and map figures of our well-received 2005 report are available for download. - Evaluating the Ecological Condition of the South Bay - 2001 Symposium on Salmon and Steelhead in SF Bay Area
